Ambala Cantt is one of the modern and big town of the Distrct Ambala on G.T.Road in the state of Haryana. It is famous for its big army cantonment, air force base and a very busy railway junction. It is also known for its glass scientific instruments industries especially that of metal casting, kitchen mixer grinders and submersible motor pumps. There are a number of stories regarding the name 'Ambala'. According to one, this town was founded in the 14th century by one Amba Rajput. According to another the town is named after the Goddess Bhawani Amba. Yet another stories claims that the town was originally called Amb Wala (Place of Mangoes), and over time this got corrupted into the present name of Ambala. In 1841, after an outbreak of malaria, the British abandoned the cantonment at Karnal. In its place a large cantonment was founded in Ambala in 1843. There are many shrines in and around Ambala City. There is a temple, Bhawani Amba, named after the goddess Bhawani. The Badshahi Bag Gurdwara, Sis Ganj Gurdwara, Manji Sahib Gurdwara, Sangat Sahib Gurdwara are the historical gurdwaras here. These are associated with Guru Gobind Singh, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Hargobind respectively.
Central Phoenix Club, Ambala is centrally located near the Foot-Ball Chowk in Ambala Cantt on the railway road, Ambala Cantt very near to Railway Station and main Bus Stand of Ambala Cantt The name of the club has been taken from word “Phoenix”. According to ancient myths, the phoenix is a male eagle-like bird famous for being almost immortal and for its beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life-circle the phoenix builds itself a nest and then it ignites and both bird and the nest burns fiercely and reduced to ashes, from which a new young Phoenix arises to live for another 500 years. It is symbol of fire and divinity.
In the year 1982, Shri M.Kuttappan, I.A.S. the then Commissioner Ambala Division, took over as the First President of the club. He was ably assisted by Sh.S.C.Dosiwal, I.A.S., Deputy Commissioner Ambala Sh.Pyare Lal Verma, HCS, Administrator, Municipal Committee Ambala Sadar, and Sh.Rajeshwar Prashad, first Chairman of the club, in putting the club in a fast forward mode by opening the doors of the club to the social elite of Ambala. Since then there has been no looking back. A host of new activities have been added besides a variety of outdoor and indoor games. The membership of the club has grown from a motely 100 to 800 plus members now. The Current members have been listed separately.

The Chairman, Hony Secretary., Hony. Treasurer, Joint Secretary and 4 Executive members are elected annually from amongst the active members of the club, another four Executive members are nominated by the President.
The club employs several whole-time functionaries to look after various service stations under the supervision of manager. They are entrusted to keep the club ship-shape and are always ready to serve the members and their families.
The club is centrally located near the Foot-Ball Chowk in Ambala Cantt. A spacious building and lovingly maintained lush green laws and decorative plants provide a befitting ambience for different activities of the club. 4 A.C. Guest Rooms, 2 A.C. Kitty Party Hall, Separate Veg. and Non-Veg. Kitchen, Centrally A.C. Bar and Centrally A.C. Restaurant, Health Club, Library, Lawn-Tennis, Table Tennis, Card Room, Billiard Room and an indoor badminton hall etc., are always available to pamper the members.
The club organizes several social functions. Come festival season and our club goes into an over-drive. With style and aplomb we celebrate the festivals of Dusshera, Deepawali, X-Mas, New Year, Lohri, Holi etc. National days of 15th August and 26th January deservedly attract fervent participation of the members and their families. Cultural nights, musical recitals, art exhibitions and fun-fests bring out the best from our young and old enthusiasts.
Our club is affiliated to clubs of the neighbouring states, listed elsewhere. This facilitates inter-club exchanges and provides club facilities to members visiting other parts of the country.
